Vaute x Ecco Bella

It probably goes without saying, but I absolutely LOVE working with people that are on a mission to make the world a better place! Which is why working with Leanne Mai-Ly Hilgart of Vaute Couture is always so awesome. Leanne designs fabulous clothing and coats using all sustainable fabrics and no animal products whatsoever. This season, I teamed up with her to do makeup for Vaute's Fall/Winter LookBook, as well as Leanne's new press photos (she just went red!)

On our last shoot together, Leanne introduced me to Ecco Bella, a gorgeous, vegan makeup line. I fell in love with their lush colors and textures, so we decided to collaborate. All the makeup I used on Leanne and the models in her lookbook is by Ecco Bella! Be sure to check out their new website and try some of my favorite items, such as the FlowerColor Blush and Lipsticks. It's all infused with plant-based goodness like green tea and aloe vera, plus the colors are really pretty and wearable.

Beauty Food Supper Club #3

On November 12th, Jolene Hart Swanekamp, Sara Jane Mercer and I hosted our 3rd seasonal Beauty Food Supper Club at Sun in Bloom. In honor of the upcoming holidays (and our shared "recipe" for health and happiness) we titled the event, Beauty, Food & Gratitude. As you can see below, the lovely Jolene is expecting a baby very soon! We all have so much to be thankful for.

Jolene, Sara and I - thrilled to be hosting together!

Once again, the Supper Club was attended by so many dynamic women (and even one man this time-cool!) We chatted the night away over an amazing, vegan and organic/local foods feast created by Sun in Bloom Founder and Head Chef, Aimee Follette.

This is Aimee sharing her inspiration for creating the meal and encouraging us to try the entree at home!

The gorgeous 4 Seasons Salad

Raw Pumpkin Cheesecake- oh my!

Our guests also took home a wonderful gift bag featuring beauty and wellness goodies by La Bella Figura, W3ll People, Kusmi Tea, Youngblood Cosmetics and Hail Merry. We are so grateful to our sponsors and everyone who attended the Beauty Food Supper Club!

Join our new Facebook Page to see more pictures and keep in touch. You will be the first to know about our next event- we are looking forward to it already!

Naturally Beautiful

Earlier this year, I was thrilled to be invited to appear on a new Veria Living television show called Naturally Beautiful. Veria is a super-cool network that focuses exclusively on health and wellness. Hosted by the amazing Nitika Chopra of Bella Life, Naturally Beautiful is all about beauty from the inside out!

I was asked to do a series of makeovers, offer beauty tips and lots more. I was totally honored to be a guest on not one, but two episodes of the show. My first one just aired on December 3rd and it was so much fun to watch!

Nitika and I talked all about how to choose makeup for different skin tones and face shapes. Then I demonstrated by creating makeup looks for three different women, using my favorite products from Jane Iredale, Christopher Drummond, Nvey Eco and 100% Pure

I look forward to sharing the episode with you, as soon as I get the link (it can only be watched live for now).  And, I will keep you posted on the 2nd episodes air date.
In the meantime, here are some shots from the set!

Having a blast with gorgeous host, Nitika Chopra!

Mind, Body, Beauty!

My latest live event, Mind, Body, Beauty, was an interactive workshop that embraced the connection between our spiritual, mental and physical selves. It was so wonderful to be able to bring together a group of amazing women who are all passionate about cultivating inner and outer beauty! We were all so grateful and inspired by everyone who attended...

The hosts: Raquel, Victoria, Me + Jennifer
To begin the evening, Granola Glamour Founder and LifeStylist Raquel Griffin lead us through a powerful guided meditation. This put everyone in the room in a state of total bliss and tranquility. She reminded us of the importance of inner peace and taking the time to connect with our spirit. Be sure to check out Raquel's GG post featuring some of her go-to guided meditations!

Next, Holistic Happiness Coach Jennifer Kass introduced us to her signature program, The Happiness Blueprint. Jennifer outlined her simple and effective steps to creating more happiness, harmony and beauty in our lives. She had us envision someone we were grateful for and then share this with a partner. It was a magical moment that inspired many smiles, hugs and tears of joy amongst the participants! Download Jennifer's Happiness Blueprint here.

Green beauty at it's best!
Then it was time for my Summer Makeup Demo! I applied a fresh, easy look to my model using my favorite, all-natural makeup and skincare brands. I discussed the importance of choosing healthy beauty products as well as using makeup as a tool for enhancing our natural beauty and confidence. I was thrilled to be able to introduce products from our fabulous sponsors- Pangea Organics, CV Skinlabs, Alima PureRevolution Organics and Vapour Beauty- knowing everyone would be taking them home in their goodie bags!

Mind, Body, Beauty goodie bags rocked!
Great Jones Space was the perfect setting for this beauty and love-fest. It's warm, bright and has great energy, thanks to owner and curator Victoria Keen. Her vibrant artwork and lovely altar add special touches to the airy space. I recommend it to anyone looking for a space to host a class, workshop or art show.

Mascara Mojo

In the world of natural, plant-based cosmetics, formulating a mascara that does everything we want it to, sans the chemicals, hasn't been an easy task. Thankfully, there have been innovations in this area and there are now some great, non-toxic alternatives to the commercial brands.

The wonderful Organic Spa Magazine recently interviewed me on the subject! Check out "Mascara Mojo" for my mascara tips and top product picks in their August/September issue.

Interview with The Numinous

If you’re reading this blog, chances are you give a shit about what goes into your body – nothing very numinous about clogging your third chakra with dirty dairy, and all that sodium fluoride in the tap water calcifying your third eye. And so you’ll sometimes find us posting about natural, chemical-free beauty products. Because sometimes, it’s what’s on the outside that counts.

Rebecca Casciano is a professional make-up artist who specialises in educating people on green beauty, and recently, along with holistic happiness coach Jennifer Kass and life-stylist and Numinous contributor Raquel Griffin, she hosted a Mind, Body, Beauty event in NYC to get into the fact that how we look and how we feel are totally interwoven.

By way of introduction, we got Rebecca to give us the basics on what it means to green your beauty regime.

"Number 1) Your health. The skin can absorb up to 70% of what we apply to it. In the US, that means thousands of ingredients used in cosmetics that have not been tested for long-term safety. Studies show that many of these ingredients have cumulative effects that can contribute to a range of health issues such as cancer, infertility, skin issues and much more.  2) Your appearance. You use cosmetics to look good, right? But if they contain a lot of synthetic chemical ingredients, they’re not doing us any favours in the long run. Natural, plant-based ingredients are just so much more nourishing and will help maintain prettier hair, skin and nails as we age. 3) Mamma Earth. The products we use each day end up affecting our our soil, air and water. We wash the chemicals we use back into the water supply, adding to the toxic burden.”

“Because it’s about making conscious choices about how we care for our body temple and the world we live in. Spirituality is holistic, and by adopting an eco-conscious lifestyle, you are honouring the Earth in a powerful way. If you believe everything is connected, then seeking to live in ways that are aligned with nature is a spiritual practice we can all benefit from.

Look out for parabens (methylparaben, propylparaben, butylparaben), ‘fragrance’ and sodium laureth sulfate (SLS). Parabens are a common preservative that have been found to disrupt estrogen levels and promote breast cancer. The word ‘fragrance’ usually denotes the use of hundreds of synthetic ingredients including pthalates, which have been linked to lung, reproductive and kidney damage. SLS (yeah, funny name for that hotel in Miami…) is a foaming agent that helps products such as shampoos and body washes suds up and break down oil and dirt. Unfortunately, it’s also a penetration enhancer, which means it can allow for more synthetic chemicals to be absorbed into the skin and bloodstream.”

That we don’t have to compromise luxury, style or most importantly, our health, to be beautiful! I have discovered awesome brands that are really committed to making products that are gorgeous, safe and effective. As both a makeup artist and long-time makeup wearer, I can honestly say I am really happy with the alternatives I have found.”

Hmmm, not convinced? Now it’s time to put Rebecca’s theory to the test, and have her find chic, do-what-they-say-on-the-box alternatives to one real girl’s beauty product line up.

My Summer 2013 Tips + Trends

I had the pleasure of presenting Summer 2013 Tips + Trends at Shecky's Girls Night Out in NYC. I thought I would share the recap with you- enjoy!

Sun Protection is Paramount

  • Choose safe sunscreen: most brands contain harmful ingredients that penetrate the skin and can cause future health issues.
  • Avoid retinyl palmitate (Vitamin A), which is linked to increased cancer cell growth, and oxybenzone, fragrance and parabens which are hormone disruptors and skin allergens.
  • Look for zinc oxide or titanium dioxide as active ingredients and products that are paraben, fragrance, and petro-chemical free.
  • Visit for a comprehensive guide to healthiest sunscreens, foundations, lip balms and skincare.

Hydrate Inside and Out

  • In Summer months, our body needs extra hydration due to more perspiration, activities and dehydrating beverages like caffeine and alcohol.
  • 7+ glasses a day help to fight heat exhaustion, fatigue and keeps skin supple.
  • Great addition: coconut water! It is a rich source of electrolytes, minerals and B-vitamins.
  • Fresh lemon juice in water helps to flush toxins, aids in digestion and is rich in vitamin C.
  • Spray your skin with hydrosols (floral waters) to hydrate, cool off and soothe inflammation. (One of my faves is Blissoma Tone Adaptive Energy Tonique- so refreshing!)

The Energy of Color

Have you ever thought about how the colors of your makeup can evoke a mood or feeling? Every color in the rainbow has an energy that conveys different meanings. Some are universal, while others change depending on where you are in the world. Color is a quick way to brighten up your face, as well as express your creativity, style, and personality. Makeup artists use something called “color theory” to determine what hues will enhance a clients appearance, based on their hair, skin, and eye color. We also use it to neutralize unwanted colors such as redness in the skin or dark circles under the eyes.
Whether you are a makeup artist or novice, it’s helpful to know the basics of color theory to assist in your product choices. The first thing you want to note is the differences between warm and cool undertones.
Warm colors have undertones of red, orange and yellow.
Cool colors have undertones of blue, green and indigo.
Shades such as purple are a combination of warm (red) and cool (blue) colors.
All skin tones have a combination of warm and cool undertones and although one is usually predominant, some can be considered “neutral.”
Next, it’s important to understand complementary colors. These are hues that are opposite of each other on the color wheel. You may be familiar with this tool if you have taken an art class or went to cosmetology school. Complementary colors, such as red and green, create maximum contrast when placed next to one another. For example, if you have green or blue eyes, wearing lipstick with a red or warm undertone, will actually intensify your eye colorOn the same note, if you have a lot of redness in your skin tone, you will want to avoid wearing blue or green on your eyes.

Now that you know a bit about color theory, I want to share something I find fascinating, the energy of color. What does your makeup say about your mood or personality? Check out the symbolism of colors and suggestions for ways to express yourself through makeup on the original Green Beauty Team post!

Beauty Food Supper Club #2

On April 4th, we hosted our second Beauty Food Supper Club at Sun In Bloom. This time, our theme was Spring Beauty Renewal, so we each shared our top detox tips for home, health and beauty. The gorgeous meal, created by SIB's Head Chef Aimee Follette, incorporated seasonal foods such as cabbage, carrots, mango and strawberry in unique (and delicious) ways.

Avocado Kimchi Salad
Raw Strawberry Cheesecake
Our guests at the Supper Club were a lovely group of women who once again came from all over (one even came from New Hampshire!) and shared a mutual passion for beauty and wellness. Recipes, helpful tips and personal stories were shared, new friendships forged and connections deepened. We laughed, learned and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves over some of the best beauty foods on the planet!

Get the Glow With Me + Britta

Britta Aragon is another one of these extraordinary women I am so grateful to know and work with. Britta is not only a natural beauty expert, makeup artist, cancer survivor and author of When Cancer Hits, she is the creator of Cinco Vidas, an extensive resource for safe self-care AND an awesome natural skincare line,  CV Skinlabs. Amazing! It was a special honor for me to do her makeup for her recent photo session, where we had a great time sharing our mutual passions in beauty and wellness.

I am a huge fan of CV Skinlabs, which Britta created to heal, soothe and nourish the skin without potentially harmful ingredients and irritants. She was inspired to design the line after caring for her father during his eight-year battle with cancer. It's especially beneficial to anyone with compromised or sensitive skin. I truly love all the products, but don't leave home without the Restorative Skin Balm in my bag to treat dry lips and cuticles :)

I am so excited to announce that Britta and I will be teaming up again to present "How to Get Glowing, Luminous Skin in 10 Steps" at Shecky's Girls Night Out on March 7th and 8th. Shecky's has been bringing women together in cities across the country for over 10 years and this is the debut of their expert workshop series in NYC!

We would LOVE to see you there!
Read more about it and be sure to get your tickets here
